Lake Shafer Lake Shafer, located in north western Indiana, is one of two man-made lakes built on the Tippecanoe River. Lake Shafer was created in 1923 when the Norway Hydroelectric Dam was built just north of Monticello. In 1925 the Oakdale Hydroelectric Dam was built slightly south of Monticello creating Lake Freeman. The man-made lakes of Shafer and Freeman are unequaled because the "run-of-the-river" dams help to maintain a consistent water level in both lakes throughout the year. 1,291acres of recreational waters contained by a 50-mile shoreline offers all types of water sports' activities and has become a favorite summertime destination for tourists. With Indiana's largest amusement park being located on the lake, thousands of tourists come to the lake to take advantage of the Indiana Beach Amusement Park and Camp Resort. Fishing Lake Shafer sponsors several fishing tournaments throughout the year and is host to the annual American Bass Anglers' Fishing Tournament |
