Lake Wylie

Lake Wylie is a reservoir created originally by Catawba Power Company in 1904, making it the oldest reservoir on the Catawba River. The Catawba Dam impounded the Catawba River, and the lake was called Lake Catawba. In 1925, Southern Power Company raised the level of the dam, increasing the original 668 surface acres to the current 12,177 acres. Since the lake lies on the North Carolina-South Carolina border, only 7,316 acres lie within South Carolina's borders in York County, SC.

In 1927, Southern Power merged with Duke Power Company, and the lake's name changed from Lake Catawba to Lake Wylie. Duke Power maintains control over this lake today, in partnership with South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, York County, and Mecklenburg County.

Fishing

This lake holds the South Carolina State Record for a one-pound 13.5-ounce white perch in 1986, and that record was tied in 2007 with another white perch. Other fish stocked in this lake include bluegill and white and striped bass. Fishermen are advised to obtain proper licenses, as no reciprocal agreements exist between North Carolina and South Carolina that honor the other state's fishing licenses on any boundary waters.
