Lake Wylie The Catawba Power Company created Lake Wylie in 1904 by impounding the Catawba River. This is the oldest reservoir on that river, and it originally was named Lake Catawba. When ownership was transferred to Duke Power in 1927, that power company renamed the lake to Lake Wylie. The lake contains 12,177 surface acres, and approximately 4,861 acres of that lake lies in Mecklenberg County, North Carolina. Duke Power maintains control over this lake today, in partnership with South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, York County, and Mecklenburg County. However, the lake brushes the southeastern Charlotte suburbs, making this location ideal for finding lodging. Facilities in Charlotte include campgrounds, B&Bs, temporary housing, hotels and motels, and resorts. The Charlotte tourism website listed below also contains special packages for lodging deals. Review the Lake Resource Guide for additional lodging. Communities The North Carolina portion of Lake Wylie is located within Mecklenberg County, with access to the Charlotte Douglas International Airport. The lake is easily accessible from I-485 via York Road. This road leads to the lake, and it also crosses the lake to the North Carolina shores. |
