Arkabutla Lake

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers developed Arkabutla Dam on the Coldwater River as the second dam in a series of four for the Yazoo Headwaters Project. The other three lakes, Enid, Sardis, and Grenada Lakes, were constructed about the same time for flood control along the Lower Mississippi Valley. Arkabutla Lake today sees about two million people per year who swim, fish, boat, sail, and camp in this lake's 57,250 acres of land and water. The reservoir alone covers 40,704 acres.

Arkabutla Lake is located a mere 30 miles from Memphis and from the Tunica casinos. Development around the lake includes camping, golf courses, beaches, and tent and RV camping at one of the 333 camp sites located around this lake.

Fishing

Arkabutla Lake is rated as one of the top five crappie fishing lakes in the country. But, don't stop at the crappie, because anglers also can catch largemouth bass and channel and flathead catfish. Gerald Conlee caught a state record four-pound, four-ounce black crappie in this reservoir in 1991.

Lodging

Arkabutla Lake is located so near Memphis suburbs and I-55 that finding a hotel room is easy -- especially along the expressway in the towns of Senatobia, Coldwater, and Hernando. Tunica, with its resorts and casinos, is located just 30 miles from the lake. But, if you want to stay on the lake's shore, plenty of camping is available at six recreation areas around the lake. Hernando Point is the most popular location, with pull-through sites for RVs, showers, hookups, a boat launch ramp, swimming area, picnic area, and playground.

Review the Lake Resource Guide for additional lodging.
