Cave Run Lake The largest muskie ever caught in Kentucky -- 47 pounds -- was caught in Cave Run Lake in 2008. Located south of Morehead along Kentucky Route 801, this 8,270-acre lake is a reservoir constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The dam was built in 1965, and became operational in 1974. Since this lake is one of three lakes located in the Daniel Boone National Forest, you'll find a myriad of activities for the entire family. Cave Run Lake offers swimming, boating, sailing, jet skiing, camping, hiking, bike trails, hunting and fishing. Campgrounds provide nearly 400 campsites, some with RV hook-ups. The campgrounds also have swimming beaches and group-use picnic areas. Boat rental is available at the local marinas, and horseback riding is a favorite pastime. ATV riding and hiking are also available for those wishing to explore the wildlife of the Cave Run Lake area. Be sure to check out White Sulphur ATV Trails. Cave Run Lake has 12 ramps for boat launching. A fee pass is required to use Alfrey, Claylick, Poppin Rock, Long Bow, Scott Creek and Warix boat ramps.
