Buckhorn Lake Buckhorn Lake is located south of Buckhorn and northwest of Hazard off Kentucky Route 28. The Army Corps of Engineers created this 1,230-acre reservoir in 1967 by impounding the Kentucky River. The lake begins the Middle Fork of that river. The Corps, in cooperation with the Commonwealth of Kentucky manages the land and water for wildlife, fisheries and recreation. FishingOne of the largest lakes in eastern Kentucky, Buckhorn Lake features largemouth bass, white crappie, bluegill, channel catfish, and muskie. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources stock muskie in this lake. Muskie used to naturally range in Middle Fork Kentucky River, where the lake now stands. From April through November the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife also regularly stocks the stilling basin, just below the dam, with trout. |
