Over 10,000 years ago the glacial movement and melting that formed the Great Lakes also created kettle holes that formed a chain of lakes in northeastern Indiana. Lake James is known as the crown jewel in Indiana's Chain of Lakes. Located in northeastern Indiana, in Steuben and Kosciusko counties, the naturally-formed, Lake James provides 1,229 acres of sparkling recreational waters used for boating,-fishing, water skiing and other water sports.

Although Lake James' 18-mile shoreline is mostly developed with high-priced lake-front properties, the eastern shore is home to Pokagon State Park, which is one of the top-rated parks in Indiana. Pokagon State Park boasts numerous facilities for three-season activities such as horseback riding, primitive camping, picnicking, hiking and biking, a clean beach for swimming and a Nature Center.

In the wintertime, Pokagon State Park provides groomed trails for cross country skiing and a toboggan slide while the lake is open for ice fishing and skating.

Fishing

Bass, catfish and pan fish abound in Lake James. After years of concerted efforts, walleye is fast becoming another one of the lakes' top offerings.

Lake James holds the state record for producing the largest Muskellunge caught in Indiana waters. In 2002, Darrin Conley's catch weighed in at 42 pounds, 8 ounces.

Lake James is one of few Indiana lakes where speed boats can be legally operated. Lake James' boaters can access the lake from any of several public, fee-free boat launch ramps available around the lake. In addition, privately-owned boat ramps can be used for those willing to pay a fee.
