Mitchell Lake

Located along the Coosa River between Lake Jordan and Lay Lake, Mitchell Lake is a reservoir situated east of Clanton in Chilton County, Alabama. Offering 147 miles of shoreline, this reservoir was constructed by Alabama Power originally for flood control and to supply hydroelectricity to central Alabama. The lake has since become popular for boating, swimming, and fishing.

Mitchell Lake offers a very fertile environment for spotted and largemouth bass, bluegill, black and white crappie, and redear sunfish. The Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division currently stocks hybrid striped bass, and the Division has stocked numerous sport fish in the 1980s, including Florida largemouth bass, walleye, and striped bass. The excellent fishing opportunity has not changed here in twenty years, which could be one reason why a tournament weigh-in station now is available at the public Higgins Ferry Access Area.
