Holt Lake

Holt Lake is a reservoir located on the Black Warrior River just north of Tuscaloosa. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers impounded this lake with the Holt Lock and Dam in 1966. The Bankhead Reservoir, located 18 miles upstream, feeds into Holt Lake, which then feeds into the William Bacon Oliver Reservoir downstream. Visitors can find several camping areas as well as facilities for boaters, swimmers, hikers, and anglers.

Fishing

Best known for largemouth and spotted bass, this lake also offers crappie, bream, drum, and several species of catfish, buffalo, and hybrid bass.

Boating

Two privately managed marinas on the lake's shores offer boat docking and storage. Several public use areas exist along Holt Lake, including the Rocky Branch Public Use Area, Rock Quarry Landing Public Use Area, Daniel Creek Public Use Area, and Old Lock 15 Public Use Area. The only way to gain access of the opposing public access areas across the lake is by boat or near Tuscaloosa on the Paul Bryant Bridge on Alabama Road 297 or on the Holt Lock and Dam. The next closest crossing in the John Hollis Bankhead Lock and Dam or the Franklin Ferry Bridge on Jefferson County Road 21, located upstream.

Lodging

Deerlick Creek is one of the active campgrounds on Holt Lake, providing visitors with lake access, hiking, and biking. Other modern camp sites and primitive camping facilities are located around the lake. Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park also provides camping, and that park is located about 25 miles southeast from the lake.

Since the lake is situated between Tuscaloosa and Birmingham, a wide variety of accommodations are easy to find within an hour's drive. The lake also is located about one-half hour from I-20/I-59, where accommodations also are available.

Review the Lake Resource Guide for additional lodging.

Communities

Holt Lake is located in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama near the city of Tuscaloosa. Unfortunately, Tuscaloosa's airport only serves jet charters, so visitors need to use the nearby Birmingham airport for general air transportation into the region. Birmingham is located a little over one hour from Holt Lake, and Tuscaloosa is within an hour from the lake.
