Guntersville Lake

Guntersville Lake, Alabama's largest lake, is located in the northeastern part of the state between Guntersville and Bridgeport. The Tennessee Valley Authority impounded the Tennessee River with the Guntersville Dam in 1939, and the lake extends 75 miles to the Nickajack Dam in southern Tennessee. The tailwaters of this lake feed into the next reservoir in the Tennessee River, Wheeler Lake.

Fishing

Crappie accounts for over half the total catch out of this lake, but anglers can find bass, bluegill, sauger, and catfish here, too. If you want to hire a fishing guide, plenty are available to help you find the best spots.

Boating

Guntersville Lake offers serveral boat ramps. Bridgeport offers public access south of the city, and boaters also can put in at Stevenson Boat Ramp, located south of Bridgeport on Alabama Highway 117. Guntersville provides access as do many marinas located along the lake's shores. Both Jackson and Marshall Counties have marinas. If you need to rent a boat, you can do so in Guntersville.

       
Lodging

Lake Guntersville State Park sits on the banks of the Tennessee River at Guntersville Lake. Not only does this park have an 18-hole championship golf course, it also provides a beach complex, outdoor swimming pool, and a resort lodge, cabins, chalets, and camp sites. Communities

The dam is located in Marshall County, and Guntersville Lake covers 67,000 surface acres over Marshall and Jackson Counties in Alabama. Guntersville is located immediately on the lake to the south, while Scottsboro sits on the lake to the north. Visitors have easy access to the lake from Huntsville, which is located just 40 miles west. I-50, which is just a few miles east of the lake, leads to Birmingham and Chattanooga, Tennessee.
